Founding Base

The Sea and Maritime Law Research Association is a legal entity established in 2025 within the framework of the Turkish Civil Code No. 4721 and the legislation on associations. The Association, headquartered in Ankara, is shortly referred to as “Lex Maris”. Lex Maris, a Latin abbreviation, is derived from the combination of the words “Lex” and “Mare”. As is known, the Latin word “lex” alone generally means law or statute. “Maris” is the inflected form of the Latin word “mare,” meaning sea. Therefore, “Lex Maris” has been adopted as the short designation of the Association, in the sense of the Sea and Maritime law.

The founding members of LexMaris consist of distinguished scholars specialized in various fields of sea and maritime law as well as experienced practitioners who have been active in the field for many years. Recognized for their scholarly works, academic events, and projects at both the national and international level, these members have also contributed to the development of the discipline and raised significant awareness through pioneering research on contemporary and controversial issues of sea and maritime law.

Proceeding from the understanding that the theory of sea and maritime law cannot be separated from its practice, LexMaris brings together academic knowledge and practical experience, a synthesis that constitutes one of the essential foundations of its institutional identity.
