Founding Purpose
The purpose of the Sea and Maritime Law Research Association (LexMaris) is to contribute to the advancement of the sea and maritime law through scholarly activities and research; to promote the fundamental principles of Turkish sea and maritime law in the international arena; to assess the applicability of universally recognized rules of sea and maritime law within Türkiye; and to examine and safeguard Türkiye’s legitimate rights and interests, both in the seas along its coasts and across the world’s oceans.
LexMaris aims to conduct scientific research on maritime zones (such as internal waters, the territorial sea, the contiguous zone, the continental shelf, the exclusive economic zone, the high seas, polar waters, particularly sensitive sea areas, straits, and search and rescue regions) and maritime activities (such as ship operations, the exploitation of natural resources at sea, the protection of the marine environment, maritime tourism and sports, artificial islands and installations, submarine cables and pipelines, ports, scientific research, and the settlement of disputes arising from maritime activities).
In pursuit of these aims, the Association endeavors to:
- publish scholarly works,
- prepare reports,
- provide expert opinions and consultancy,
- initiate or participate in projects,
- organize or attend meetings and conferences, and
- organize or contribute to educational activities.
In so doing, LexMaris intends to cooperate, in accordance with applicable regulations, with national and international institutions working in related areas. Recognizing the inherently international nature of sea and maritime law, the Association aspires to pursue its objectives not only within Türkiye but also worldwide.
